CCS Saturday —

UPDATE: You can read the preview for today’s playoff games here >> >> there are capsules on all three games. Half Moon Bay fought valiantly Friday night, but lost to Carmel 42-35.

November in San Mateo County can mean only one thing: CCS football time. It’s a great time to be in the newspaper business with a lot of great games on the schedule. The 2010 version of the playoffs holds a particular interest to me with my high school alma mater back in action — Jefferson High. It’s been a long time since the Indians of the Daly City high school played in the Central Coast Section playoffs. You have to go back to the 1999/2000 school year, with the likes of Nick Chenault, Karl Stewart, Jamon Simmons, Jonathan Emelo, Aaron Gentry and that mammoth offensive line to find the last Jefferson CCS team. That season, they finished second after dusting off St. Ignatius (I was there), North Monterrey County (there too, made the bus ride to De Anza College), but running into the buzzsaw that was Mitty High and losing  43-6. Anyways, so this year it was awesome to put something together.

At first, I focused on Jefferson and their game against Terra Nova — but Nathan Mollat, uber-sports editor, told me he needed a more centralized piece since the article he was working was broader in its scope. So upon going back to drawing board, the piece above is what I came up with. Pictures are from the Daily Journal archive taken from Nathan’s camera. I can’t take all the credit for this, it was inspired by a similar piece done by Sam Manchester, who is a beast.

Anyways, the game is Saturday at 7:00. Come dressed warm, and there’s a pretty good chance of rain. If Jefferson wins, then they’re on their way to the CCS Division III final against one of the Monterrey schools I believe. The Indians have been a great turnaround story in 2010. To say that I’m super impressed with them getting this far is an understatement. Good job, fellas.

You can find that Jefferson/Terra Nova piece here.
