Isaias Flores — Athlete of the Week

30 11 2010

Did I mention that Sequoia, yes, Sequoia, will be playing in the Division II CCS Final? Impressive no?

Well, that’s in large part to Isaias Flores, senior running back for the Cherokee(s). In the game against Leland all Flores did was rush for 114 yards and two scores plus light it up on defense and special teams. Congrats to No. 35.

Sequoia football coach Rob Poulos knew he had one of the Peninsula Athletic League’s most versatile players in Isaias Flores. He was, after all, named the Lake Division’s Utility Player of the Year last season.

This season, in his quest to have his starting players serve only on offense or defense, Poulos penciled in Flores as one of his starting linebackers.

But after running for nearly 800 yards last season — as well as serving as the emergency quarterback — Poulos knew he had to get Flores incorporated into the offense, to give the Cherokees a third option to go along with quarterback James Beekley and tailback Josh Lauese.

Flores is also one of the team’s fastest and most ferocious hitters. He certainly needed to be used on special teams as well.

Suddenly, Flores went from a one-way starter on defense to not coming off the field.

Saturday, all of Flores attributes were on display in the Cherokees’ 27-14 win over Leland in the Central Coast Section Division II semifinal game. Flores led the Cherokees in rushing with 114 yards on just 10 carries, scoring twice. He also made a key interception to go along with six tackles. He made a big hit on punt coverage as well, just to announce his authority.

For his efforts, Flores is the Daily Journal Athlete of the Week.
