Athlete of the Week — Ivyonne Cook-Taylor

22 02 2011

From the school of “You can’t stop her, you can only hope to contain her,” this week’s Athlete of the Week is Terra Nova’s Ivyonne Cook-Taylor.

I would and could, write more about her, but truth is, her coach gave us some great quotes. Here’s an excerpt of the story that ran in today’s Daily Journal.

Last week’s Peninsula Athletic League girls basketball tournament was somewhat of a coming out party for Terra Nova’s Ivyonne Cook-Taylor.

Those in Tiger country already know she’s one of the most exciting and athletically gifted players in the section. And now, after leading her team to their third consecutive PAL tournament title and with the CCS playoffs around the corner, the rest of us will know that as well.

“That’s why I love that tournament,” said Terra Nova head coach Kareem Summerville, who coached Cook-Taylor for two seasons. “Everyone gets to see the best players in our league.”

Cook-Taylor put up ridiculous numbers in last week’s tournament. Against Westmoor, she scored 22 points and pulled down 15 rebounds. Against Burlingame in the semi-finals, she tallied 19 and 15. And in the championship game, with the best the league has to offer, Cook-Taylor had maybe her best game of the tournament, scoring 22 points and 10 rebounds.

For her efforts, Cook-Taylor is the Daily Journal Athletes of the Week.
