March Madness —

17 03 2011

March Madness is upon us and we at the Daily Journal take this time of year to have a little fun. SMDJ sponsors a MM contest in which we invite our readers to fill out a bracket, turn it in and follow along for the chance to win some prizes. As if people needed any more reason to participate in the Madness — offering them free stuff is like icing on the cake! I’m sure people would turn them in even if nothing was offered.

Anyway, this year my publisher, Jerry Lee, asked if the sports guys could fill one out so readers can compare how they’re doing with how the “experts” are doing. Below you will find a picture of the bracket I submitted for the contest. Per company rules, even if I end up winning, I won’t be able to cop that $200 gift card. Sucks.

That’s right, I’m taking Ohio State. And it wouldn’t be a Julio Lara bracket without some outlandish pick — that’s where BYU comes in. I’m hoping Jimmer Ferdette goes OFF and averages 30 plus points a game! Good luck to all our readers, including this one guy from San Bruno who today faxed in 19, yes 19, different brackets! Funny thing is, he picked No. 1 seeds to win in all of them. Heck, if you’re going to take the time to turn in 19 brackets, you might as well go out on a limb on one of two of them, take at least a No. 2 or a No. 6. It’s been done before.

While we’re on the subject of March Madness, take a minute to head over to the great Charles Apple blog. He’s got a couple of great NCAA tournament previews done by some super visual artists around the country. You can find that blog post here.

Hey July, I’ve missed your blogs and am glad to get one this morning with all the death/destruction/political unrest it’s good to see some sports too.

Thanks, Mrs. T — we’re announcing our Athletes of the Winter soon and I got a little something something up my sleeve, so keep an eye out for that.
