THE HEAT WIN … AND MORE

22 06 2012

So, what happens at the Journal some times is what I like to call musical chairs. My boy, Erik, took a vacation this week — thus, Nathan, Sports Editor, moves into the copy editor/layout desk and I stay where I’m at but get to play a little more with layout on the Sports side. It gets kind of hectic, BUT, we were sort of ready. Here are some of the pages with what I consider pretty big SPORTS FRONT treatments. We’ll start with Friday’s …

MIAMI HEAT: NBA CHAMPIONS

I came into the office early on Thursday knowing this was a possibility so we had to prep a plan just in case the Heat pulled off a Game 5 win over Oklahoma City — which they did. So, out went a local front page and in went this monster thing. We’re not a Florida paper, but I felt it was still important to play up Miami’s win considering that, win or lose, LeBron and company are alway a hot-button topic. I’m actually quite happy we were able to put something local up front as well.

MALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

Usually our Athletes of the Year package merits its own post — and given the weekend, I think I just might. But first, this page does not get built without the help of Nick Manessis, the actual Athlete of the Year, who came up huge with some photos from his Facebook page. We can go further into detail later.

FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

Charlotte has to be one of my all-time favorite athletes — she’s a great kid, a terrific interview and a freakin’ stud athlete. It wasn’t just a blast creating this page, but writing the story was a ton of fun and a nice challenge as well. Like I said, that’s for another post.
