Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero @HPPavilion — Press Conference

8 07 2011

Gilroy’s Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero will head back to the ring in late August (the 27th to be exact) to try and capture his sixth world title in a fourth different weight class. The Daily Journal was invited to attend the official press conference which included both camps. Here’s a bit of video. It’s Ghost talking a bit about the upcoming fight.

These press conferences are pretty cool, especially when they’re of the smaller variety — the fighters are usually more than willing to give you some time and answer some of your questions, even if you’re a smaller publication. Below are some photos from the press conference. Credit there belongs to Mauricio Chavez.

Here’s an excerpt from the story I filed for the Daily Journal which ran today.

Guerrero faces his toughest challenge yet
By Julio Lara, Daily Journal Staff

SAN JOSE — Bay Area native and five-time world champion Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero has never met a fight, in or out of the boxing ring, that he won’t take.

In 31 career bouts, the 28-year old from Gilroy has posted an impressive 29-1-1 record with 18 knockouts, gaining him notoriety as one of the most complete boxers in the world. And his family’s battle against the cancer that affected his wife Casey has been well documented.

But in his next championship bout, Guerrero will step into the squared circle against his toughest, most dangerous in-ring opponent to date.

In what both fight camps described several times as a sure “war,” Guerrero will face off against Marcos “Chino” Maidana, the reigning WBA and WBO Interim Lightweight World Champion on Aug. 27 at the HP Pavilion in San Jose.

The fight will be the main event in HBO’s Boxing After Dark card and it marks the return of HBO to the HP Pavilion after hosting a series of fights a handful of years ago.

“We have been looking to bring a world title fight to the Bay Area for a long time,” said Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions via press release. “And now we have one.”

Tickets for the fight go on sale today at the HP Pavilion box office.
